What do you do in Reformer Pilates?

You may have heard me talk about Reformer Pilates and in our Mat Pilates classes at St John's Church, the Sydenham Centre and the Sydenham Tennis Club, we often do a few 'Reformer on the Mat' exercises using our resistance bands.

So how is Reformer Pilates different from Mat Pilates you might ask? In Mat Pilates, we use only our own body weight, while Reformer Pilates uses springs for assistance and resistance. Reformer Pilates is great for rehab purposes and ideal if you have injuries or chronic imbalances, as it allows you to exercise whilst not being vertically loaded or weight-bearing through your legs. For example, for those with a knee injury, this enables you to strengthen the muscles of the leg through a larger range of motion using a lighter resistance than your own body weight, speeding up your recovery through controlled movement.
